After abstaining on UN Syria vote, China backs political fix

The creation of an independent Palestinian state is necessary to correct a "historical injustice", Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Thursday following a meeting with Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki, according to Reuters.

Wang's comments mark the latest attempt to cool tensions by North Korea's most important ally and key provider of food and fuel aid. Any fighting on the Korean Peninsula is likely to draw in China, which has repeatedly expressed concerns.

While it has traditionally played a minor role in the region, a year ago China's President Xi Jinping committed US$7.6 million in aid to Palestine in a historic address to the Arab League.

The tensions amplified in Pyongyang, where Kim Jong-Un is constantly organizing nuclear tests, defying every single warning.

North Korea's flag-carrier Air Koryo remains the only company that continues to operate flights into the country.

"Lately, tensions have risen with the USA and the ROK on one side, and the DPRK on the other, and one has the feeling that a conflict could break out at any moment", Wang said, using abbreviations for South and North Korea.

Wang and Ayrault revealed at the press conference held after their meeting that they had discussed bilateral issues and major global crises such as the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the civil war in Syria. Wang told reporters Friday that all sides must stop provoking and threatening each other in their words and actions and take a flexible approach to resuming dialogue.

Action taken should be within the UN framework and in accordance with the UN Charter and basic norms of worldwide relations, Wang said.

Wang last month urged North Korea to suspend its nuclear weapon and missile tests in exchange for South Korea and the US putting their war games on hold, reviving a proposal first raised by Pyongyang.
