'Only time will tell' on improving US-China trade

He did not elaborate on the progress or the problems.

Wang Dong, Associate Professor of International Studies at China's elite Peking University, said the move may have had the added bonus in Trump's eyes of sending North Korea a message over its nuclear program, but that China was unlikely to be fazed.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the USA wants to see "tangible results" - and soon - on its trading relationship with China.

Chang indicated the Chinese president would certainly be understanding what the airstrike meant to his country as well, interpreting it as a "warning to China's People's Liberation Army, which had grown dismissive of the U.S. Navy and Air Force".

North Korean officials, including leader Kim Jong Un, have repeatedly indicated an intercontinental ballistic missile test or something similar could be coming, possibly as soon as April 15, the 105th birthday of North Korea's founding president and celebrated annually as "the Day of the Sun". Tillerson on Thursday cautioned against interpreting the strike as "a change in our policy or posture relative to our military activities in Syria today". The United States has spoken enough about North Korea.

Along with its rapidly advancing nuclear and long-range missile capabilities, North Korea has its artillery and short-range missiles trained on Seoul, the capital of US ally South Korea.

"China welcomes the United States side to participate in cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative", said Xi. But while talk of a trade war has cooled, there seems little real shift occurring. Also, Trump himself has yet to match the harsh criticism of Moscow that some of his advisers have levied.

Trump did raise his concerns on the issue with Xi. The United States has placed blame for the attack on Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"The US missile attack against Syria is a clear and unforgivable act of aggression against a sovereign state and we strongly condemn this", KCNA quoted an unnamed spokesman for the North Korean foreign ministry as saying. Underscoring that point, Washington has recently deployed numerous strategic assets to the peninsula as part of annual joint war games with the South.

At Mar-a-Lago on Friday, Trump urged China to take steps to "level the playing field for American workers", according to the White House statement.

His Thursday/Friday meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida was billed by both sides as a simple "get-to-know-you" for Trump and Xi.

The two leaders spent Friday in a series of working sessions.

Their meeting will mark the first time since they held talks in Beijing in December.

There has been no substantial progress in bilateral talks on the abduction issue, though North Korea agreed with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government in 2014 to reinvestigate the abductions of Japanese nationals. "I think that's a very important symbolisation of the growing rapport between the two countries".

China's nuclear envoy's visit to Seoul comes as a USA navy strike group is due to move toward the western Pacific Ocean near the Korean peninsula. They developed an action plan and agreed on future milestones.

President Donald Trump's previous announcement on Sunday that the USA was prepared to act independently against North Korea, should China not assist in demanding a halt to their nuclear weapons program, was reinforced by the surprise US missile attack against Syria on Thursday.

To be sure, last year, China accounted for the biggest chunk of all countries in the overall US trade deficit of $500 billion, according to the US Census Bureau.
