Goa bridge collapse toll rises to two, one missing

The footbridge named Portuguese-era Zuari, which was already under dilapidated state, collapsed suddenly, said the onlookers.

At least one person was killed, while 35 others were rescued after a foot bridge on Sanvordem river collapsed in south Goa's Curchorem town, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said.

According to Times Now, 12 people have been rescued but many are still missing.

District officials told reporters here that the body of Prakash Ekka, 28, from Jharkhand was taken out by divers early on Friday, taking the body count to two.

The search resumed on Friday morning as several persons are feared missing, which was taken over by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Friday afternoon from the Navy and local agency.

"The rescue operation began at 7.30 am today and efforts are on to check whether there are any more bodies in the water", Superintendent of Police (South) Shekhar Prabhudesai told PTI. Drishti lifeguard services, the private agency are called for the rescue operation. this private agency provides lifeguards for all the state beaches. The bridge had been closed for traffic for the last four years. Those who were very curious to watch the rescue operation of the suicide victim thronged the footbridge without realising the imminent danger.

The Navy reached the spot with a team of nine divers, with Gemini boats and associated equipment. The incident took place on Thursday evening when people gathered on the bridge following the suicide attempt by a youth. "Search and rescue operations have been intensified", Singh tweeted.
