The local connection to the shooting at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, shocked most everyone in Belleville this week.

Hodgkinson, who posted a slew of anti-Republican and anti-Trump posts on social media over the years, opened fire at the baseball practice in Alexandra, Va., injuring House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and three others.

The FBI is still investigating the case and is looking through Hodgkinson's belongings, including his cellphone, computer and camera. She did not want to discuss her husband's politics.

"I just don't know what to tell you people".

A day earlier, he allegedly damaged a door while looking for his foster daughter at a neighbour's home.

Law officers who've helped her family cope, say this ordeal has shaken the family to its core. She said she didn't know anything about him purchasing weapons. Also hurt but released from hospitals were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth.

SUZANNE HODGKINSON: I had no idea this was going to happen, and I don't know what to say about it. Officials said Hodgkinson has been identified as the man who opened fire on Republican lawm.

"He was the type of person that if you challenged him, he wouldn't back off", said lifelong friend Dale Walsh, 65.

Kristina Scrimshaw, a bartender at the Pork Barrel BBQ restaurant a few blocks from the shooting scene, said Hodgkinson had become something of a regular in recent weeks.

"I am sickened by this despicable act", Bernie Sanders said.

"I just want to let people know he wasn't evil, just exhausted of some of politics going on", a friend of Hodgkinson said.

His Facebook page shows he was a fan of Vermont Sen. Sanders acknowledged Wednesday that Hodgkinson had apparently been among many volunteers on his 2016 campaign. Hodgkinson had been angry about income inequality and conservatism.

Hodgkinson also had arrests in his background for a series of minor offenses and at least one more serious matter.

It appears Hodgkinson had a legal firearms owner identification card, despite numerous misdemeanor cases, including a 2006 domestic battery charge, which included aggravated discharge of firearm.

The New York Times reported that Hodgkinson was licensed to buy guns in IL, his state of residence.

One source told CBS News the note is not considered an "assassination list", but it is clear Hodgkinson had a group of people he was focused on recently. This week, we're focusing on the local connection to the shooting in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday, which was perpetrated by a 66-year-old man from Belleville.

Schaumleffel reported hearing about 50 shots. When he found out the shooter was from his home district, Bost's team started searching for any previous communications. The county that it's in, St. Clair County, is politically purple.
