Neill Blomkamp is Back and He's Making Sci-Fi Shorts Again

Posted June 03, 2017

Blomkamp broke out with his highly acclaimed, 2009 sci-fi film District 9, which was based on his 2006 short film Alive in Joburg.

First announced by the Oscar-nominated writer of District 9 in April, Blomkamp confirmed that the Oats Studios project was progressing earlier this month, tweeting to his followers that he was "trying ideas out", and "hoping people get behind them".

The upcoming short films will be featured on the studio's YouTube channel and the Steam streaming service as well. That changed today, when Blomkamp dropped a teaser trailer for Oat Studios Volume 1, a new series of short sci-fi films. Blomkamp's best known efforts are all set amidst science fiction dystopias in which aliens and robots often play large roles, from Chappie's armour-plated attack androids to District 9's sickly extraterrestrials.

There's no official confirmation at the moment, but it looks like Sharlto Copley, Sigourney Weaver, and Dakota Fanning were involved in this production; we'll update if and when more information becomes available. "Adapt or die. It was as simple as that".

There's no word yet on when Volume One will be released and how soon after that we'd have to wait for any other potential volumes but it seems pretty clear that Blomkamp is banking on getting significant fan support online before shopping his projects in Hollywood.

Via io9, the teaser for Oat Studios Volume 1 paints a picture of a devastating alien invasion, that's apparently left Earth at the mercy of lizard-like aliens and Paris overrun by vegetation. Most importantly, check out this very cool teaser trailer and let us know what you think!
