Portraits emerge of officers hailed as heroes at shooting

Capitol Police officer David Bailey, who was injured in Wednesday's attack, throws the first pitch.

We're referring to the two Capitol Hill police officers, Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who prevented what would have been a massacre on Wednesday when they engaged and shot a man with a rifle bent on killing Republican Members of Congress.

Special Agent Crystal Griner and Rep. Steve Scalise remain hospitalized. "They ran right into the fire".

Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence also praised Griner and Bailey in a June 16 speech he made in Miami.

The officers were only present because House Majority Whip Steven Scalise is accompanied by a security detail as a senior House member. He's from Brazil and graduated from North Carolina Central University in 2007.

"These guys were real heroes and I think without them everybody probably would have been killed", Paul said.

"[Griner's] an incredibly able and professional individual who always takes her job and responsibility seriously", Cantor told The Daily Beast.

"Their response quickly contained what could have become a deadly situation and saved any lives today", the Capitol Police Board said in a statement. "I was getting down making sure my son was down", Barton said.

"Had Steve been sick, or exhausted or lazy and didn't go to practice, then you would have saw a full-fledged massacre", Richmond said.

"She was intense, very tenacious", Scott Robinson said. Bailey was treated and released after sustaining a minor wound.

President Trump and First Lady Melania visited the hospital where two officers are recovering from injuries they received after they were shot while protecting political and business officials practicing for a charity baseball game on Wednesday.

Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, said Griner was a 2006 graduate.

That matched her attitude on the basketball court, according to her coach at Mt. Hebron High School. "He said, 'I'm thirsty.' Obviously, you don't know how much fluid he may be losing internally".

"Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in the statement.
