Members of the U.S. Congress took the field for their traditional Republicans vs. Democrats baseball game on Thursday, with many wearing hats to honor Representative Steve Scalise, who was critically wounded by a gunman as his Republican team practiced a day before.

Capitol Police officer David Bailey, who was wounded in the attack, threw out the first pitch on crutches.Donald Trump gave a video message paying tribute to Scalise, and the crowd audibly murmured early in the game when an update went out that the House majority whip's condition was improving.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center announced on Thursday that Congressman Steve Scalise (R-La.) had a second surgery and was still in critical condition.

Scalise remains in critical condition on Thursday, and President Donald Trump said "he's in some trouble" as Scalise entered into his third surgery.

The game Thursday, a Washington tradition since 1909 in which Republicans and play Democrats, went on Thursday evening at Nationals Stadium, home of the city's major league baseball team. They also signed oversized cards sending well wishes to those who were injured in the shooting, including Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana.

Trump says, "Steve is our friend, he's a patriot and he's a true fighter".

As they prepared for a bipartisan baseball game Thursday night that promised at least a brief lull in the political mud fight, some said they hoped the good feeling would last past the final inning. He said it is now hard to predict how long Scalise will need to remain in the hospital but they should have a better idea of that in the coming days.

Sava said infection remains a risk.

When he left, she said, Hodgkinson told her he was going to Washington, D.C.to "work with people to change the tax brackets". "Let us always remember that our job is to serve and represent the whole American People - and that we are all children of the same God", Trump said. Tickets for the game were selling at the rate of 500 per hour following the shooting, with proceeds benefiting a number of local charities.

Scalise, 51, was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center suffering from a single rifle shot to the left hip.

Numerous players in the congressional game Thursday night are wearing Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a graduate of the school, as they assemble at Nationals Park in Washington. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful". He sustained minor injuries to one of his wrists, elbows and lower back in the process. Investigators are trying to determine what his intent may have been - whether it was a list of potential targets for violence or whether he wrote them down for some other reason, one official said.

The FBI said it had processed a white conversion van owned by Hodgkinson, which was parked at the YMCA adjacent to where the shooting happened.

Unable to sleep on Wednesday night, Congressman Roger Williams, who was also injured running for cover during the attack, said he found solace watching baseball on the MLB channel.

On Friday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the guns found at the scene of the shooting as a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62-caliber rifle. Hodgkinson was shot by police at the scene of the attack and later died of multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. This person was not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.
