In 2013, acid was thrown at her again. With the amendment in Indian Penal Code in February 2013, incidents of acid attack are now being recorded as a separate offence under section 326A and 326B. Despite the Supreme Court's diktat to curb acid sales, and UP CM Yogi Adityanath's supposed commitment to ensuring women's safety, and police protection for the woman, nothing much seems to have improved.
The Congress on Sunday said the Uttar Pradesh governance under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has turned into "Gundaraj" and "Jungleraj".
Police are now looking for the fifth attacker, and said they would investigate her claims.
She was reportedly attacked while getting water from a pump outside a women's hostel in the city of Lucknow, according to the Guardian, despite being under "round-the-clock police protection".
Mr Trupathi was quoted saying that a bottle of acid was found in the bathroom from where the woman emerged just before the alleged attack, and that there was no sign of acid on her clothes or on the ground.
Police said no FIR has been registered yet and they are awaiting a complaint from the victim's family.
He said the final conclusion will be derived on the basis of these reports and further action will be initiated in the matter after that.
"There was a guard and some girls, who were there on the roof, when the incident took place but none of them saw anyone".
On 23 March this year, the woman had submitted a written complaint to the government railway police at Charbagh station alleging that acid had been forced down her throat on board the Allahabad-Lucknow Ganga Gomti Express. "She is in the trauma centre and not in a position to speak", Additional Director General of Police Abhay Kumar told the media.
The police, meanwhile, claimed that none of the eyewitnesses had seen anyone throwing acid or running away. "They were the preventive measures taken by the police on the intelligence input that there could be a law and order issue following assembly of large number of people", he said. The two have been at loggerheads with previous governments too, including that of Dalit leader Mayawati, but have never been arrested by them.
"The law and order has completed broken down in UP". Officials, however, have implied that the attack might have been staged by the woman herself.
"This Yogi led government in the UP is Jungleraj".
