Rifle-wielding man shoots 2, kills 1 at Bronx Lebanon Hospital

NY police urged the public to avoid the area around the hospital at 1650 Grand Concourse.

A gunman identified as a doctor opened fire inside the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in NY on Friday, killing a woman and wounding several people before killing himself, according to law enforcement officials.

Emergency medical workers can not yet enter the building as it has not yet been secured by police. CLICK TO WATCH LIVE COVERAGE FROM EYEWITNESS NEWSThere were at least three people shot and a total of five people injured in the shooting.

CBS News reported that a gunman, believed to be a former hospital employee, was armed with a rifle and had barricaded himself inside the building.

The shooting began at about 14:45 local time (18:45 GMT) at the 1,000-bed Bronx-Lebanon Hospital.

The New York Police Department posted a tweet urging members of the public to avoid the area around the hospital at 1650 Grand Concourse.

"Active shooting in Bronx Leb".

The shooter is now dead, according to NY police.

Police went floor by floor searching for the shooter while the hospital has been surrounded by emergency response vehicles.

Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, a 120-year-old facility, claims almost 1,000 beds spread across multiple units.
