Kevin Can Wait will kill off Erinn Hayes' character this fall

CBS President Kelly Kahl confirmed that the second season will time-jump about nine or ten months and reconnect with the TV family after they have had some time to mourn the loss of their mother and wife.

In June, we reported that Hayes was sacked from the show and replaced with Leah Remini.

On "Kevin Can Wait", Remini plays a tough detective named Vanessa who is the former partner of James' character, a retired cop.

Reuniting James with his former King of Queens co-star provided such fantastic chemistry that producers were keen to keep her on for the new season.

"The character will have passed away, and we will be moving forward in time", CBS programming chief Thom Sherman reportedly said at the Television Critics Association press tour.

When asked if the sitcom would make Donna's death amusing, CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said there were no plans to do that.

Kevin Can Wait is sending Donna six feet under.

The new season will fast-forward roughly a year to find Donna killed off and Kevin Gable widowed, clearing the deck for Remini, who guest-starred in a couple of episodes that closed out last season. Kahl promised that Donna Gable's death will be addressed "tastefully" and that it would help to move the series forward, but he admitted that the death of a wife and mother is not a amusing storyline. The episode was called "Sting of Queens", but Kahl says she had not planned on Remini landing a full-time role. "I think Leah and the studio and network got together and we wanted to keep that magic together". On the same day, Erinn Hayes shared she was cut from the series. They are banking on the team-up's familiarity as Remini and Kevin James used to lead another CBS comedy, "King of Queens". She said the decision was not hers and tweeted, "True, I've been let go from the show".
