Apple TV 4K launched

Posted September 13, 2017

Apple's last update to the Apple TV line was two years ago. The latest Apple TV 4K has more features than just 4K support.

Apple has officially unveiled a new 4K/HDR compatible version of its Apple TV streaming box, featuring both HDR10 and Dolby Vision support.

The Apple TV 4K will be available from September 22, and is priced at $179. Expect UK pricing to be straight conversions. The company will upgrade HD videos to 4K HDR for free. So if you stop watching a game or show halfway through, you can pick it up later on a different device, even in a different location. Moreover, how did you like the iPhone X?

But wait, what about improvements to the Siri Remote?

The Apple TV 4K is powered by the company's A10X Fusion chip, it's the same chip that powers the iPad Pro.

That's unless all this week's leaks turn out to be some wild double bluff strategy by Apple. If you don't buy now, you may kick yourself in 2020.

The announcement came today during Apple's special event held at the Steve Jobs theater in Cupertino, CA, along with the unveiling of the new Apple TV 4K.

"Apple TV goes beyond entertainment to help deliver on Apple's vision of the smart home".

tvOS is the version of iOS that works on the Apple TV. 4K content will cost the same, which is huge. In addition to this, in terms of design, the wearable was not subject to major design changes. The newest chips and the most sheer power can determine how smoothly your browsing experience is, and there aren't many ways to directly test that. Apple claims the CPU is twice as fast as before, and that the GPU is four times as fast.

Yes, everything in the above list can be provided by alternative services, from Google Play Movies to Google Cast and IFTTT, but for those already invested in the Apple ecosystem the Apple TV is a pretty neat package. These high dynamic range technologies improve the colour reproduction on television sets and offer more brightness.

However, on the software front, things are somewhat more interesting.

During the iPhone launch keynote, Apple shed some light on the future of its Apple TV range. The 4th-generation Apple TVs will likely be marked down to clear out their 2-year old inventory that should have supported 4k in the first place.

The Apple TV 4K has revamped its entire user interface for the high-resolution format, and the screensavers have been revised to support HDR, Cue added. Apple's promising that Netflix and Amazon Prime's 4K content is coming soon.

When will the 4K Apple TV launch be?

Pre-orders begin September 15th with the product being released on September 22nd.

You'll also find CBS News, The Weather Channel, Vimeo, YouTuibe, Facebook Videos, VEVO, PBS and many other apps that allow you to stream videos and movies to your TV with a purchase or with a subscription. And what about the Apple Watch 3?
