Delta Adding Free Mobile Messaging on Flights

"Rather than having to count down the hours until landing, Delta customers can continue socialising or working with the tap of a smartphone and enjoy peace of mind at every stage of the flight". Passengers expect the kind of connection speeds they get on the ground, even while flying across continents.

Only Wi-Fi enabled messaging services will work, regular text messaging that requires cell phone service will still be unavailable since the airplane will be out of cell range. Passengers can use this service without paying for in-flight internet.

'So we've developed with our partners at Gogo a free messaging app.

Delta Airlines is allowing passengers to text during flights for free, the company announced on Tuesday.

'You'll just access the app that's on the plane itself.

Bastian noted during the interview on CBS This Morning that part of the difficulties with offering perks such as free text messaging is finding bandwidth for Wi-Fi.

Bastion took over as CEO in May of previous year.

Delta is the biggest carrier to offer the service, though.

This includes all aircraft with two or more cabins - and the airline says it will be the first U.S. transatlantic carrier to offer free access to the instant messaging platform.

Delta Air Lines said it will offer free in-flight mobile messaging via iMessage, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp starting Sunday.
