Twins leave slugger Miguel Sano off AL wild-card game roster

If you look at the numbers - and we're not even getting into advanced analytics - the Yankees ought to make short work of Minnesota in Tuesday's American League wild-card game at Yankee Stadium. Normally, I wouldn't really put much stock in eight at-bats; it's a tiny sample size. The Twins finished the regular season fourth in MLB and second in the American League with just 78 errors in 162 games.

The Minnesota Twins were surprisingly in contention for a postseason spot during the 2017 Major League Baseball regular season that concluded Sunday, and they made it.

But the Twins are not chasing the demons of Ron Gardenhire, Phil Cuzzi and the Piranhas.

A day after manager Paul Molitor said he planned to use his All-Star slugger in some capacity, Sano was left off the 25-man roster for the winner-take-all game at Yankee Stadium.

"Anyone who doesn't believe in miracles is not a realist", Santana wrote with a series of hashtags, including "#SMELLBASEBALL!" I'll take Minnesota as a value play.

Luis Severino will be on the mound for the Yankees.

"I'm thinking long", Severino said when asked about his mind-set entering Tuesday's game. "So, I have to look it up".

Twins' hitters have to be aggressive early against the Yankees and get the count in their favor to drive hittable pitches. "That says a lot about this team". I think at times he struggles a bit with controlling his emotions in big moments, which of course is understandable for a 23-year-old pitcher in his first full season in the big leagues.

Long gone are Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Jorge Posada. Few expected Aaron Judge or Gary Sanchez to be quite this good this soon in their careers.

The pressure is all on the Yankees. They are supposed to win this game because it's in their park, on their turf and in front of their fans. They have the 27 world championship banners.

Gardner and Joe Mauer, who were on their teams when the Yankees beat the Twins in the 2010 ALDS, also had solid seasons. He had a fantastic season, was arguably the first-half MVP of the team, and is one of the most important players in the franchise moving forward.

The Twins have been given up for dead so many times, a hearse has been circling Target Field since midseason - wasting gasoline.

While we don't know the official starting lineups for each team until closer to gametime, we do know the starting pitchers here. Escobar this season has batted.254/.309/.449 with 21 home runs in 129 games.

The Yankees, who were the victims of a quick playoff exit after losing the 2015 AL wild-card game at home to the Astros, are stressing normalcy.

"Absolutely", Boone said. "I can see it".

One Game In New York! If inexperience shows up, we can't predict that. "I like the fact we get to throw Luis Severino out there tomorrow". Go out, have fun and embrace the opportunity.

NY won an AL-high 51 games at home this year and have won 20 of their last 28 games going into the postseason, giving them extra confidence.
