#LAAUTOSHOW: BMW Reveals A Refreshed i8 And An All New Roadster

Posted November 30, 2017

The Roadster wasn't the only i8-related development BMW unveiled in LA; since the i8 Coupe was introduced, electrification technology has evolved, and it benefits from the implements that have gone into the Roadster.

Getting back to the main attraction here, the i8 two-seat Roadster has an electrically-operated targa-style fabric top that can perform the open or close trick in under 16 seconds, at speeds of up to 50km/h.

BMW launched its i8, and i brand, as a means of testing future engineering in a production vehicle, but it didn't skip the fun. "If you're playing in that segment with the very expensive cars, it's always [that] you have to have the newest one".

A new E-Copper finish has been added, as has a Donington Grey metallic for both the Coupe and the Roadster.

On the inside, the Roadster is a two-seater rather than a 2+2 seater like the coupe, releasing about 92 litres of space in the bargain.

Speaking of the battery, its capacity rises from 7.1 to 11.6kWh.

The Roadster's trick is a new roof structure which stows automatically under a panel between the buttresses, all in around 15 seconds at up to 30mph. This allows for a 12-hp bump in peak power from the front electric motor, bringing its output to 141 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.

The refreshed i8 and new i8 Roadster should be hitting Canadian dealerships around spring 2018.

In electric-only mode both models can reach speeds of up to 65mph - 75mph when the eDrive boost mode is engaged - and to help on the eco front the engine is now fitted with a particulate filter to cut emissions. Neither is the acceleration, though the 0-60 miles per hour times now stand at 4.2 seconds for the Coupe and 4.4 seconds for the roadster; 155 miles per hour remains the limited top speed. That almost doubles the amount of storage available in the Roadster versus the i8 Coupe. A set of 20-inch BMW lightweight alloy wheels is standard, with four other options available in the same size.

Now that formula has been enhanced with a refurbished design, some battery and motor tweaks, and the introduction of a two-seat topless i8 Roadster.

Both can be ordered with Tera World Copper interior trim, which is new to the i8, and features a cloth and leather upholstery combination in a two-tone (Amido/E-Copper) colour scheme.
