President Zuma Congratulates Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters

In response to the question, Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, who was later crowned the victor, didn't flinch and took a strong stance against the harassment of women.

She is the second woman from her home country to earn the crown.

Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, is your new Miss Universe!

When asked to name the most important issue women face in the workplace, Nel-Peters said the lack of equal pay. "'I think we should have equal work for equal pay for women all over the world", she said. "So, you can sit here and act like you didn't see what Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway did, but it got me off the hook".

The runner-up was Miss Colombia Laura Gonzalez, while the second runner-up was Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett. She has been preparing to be an actress since she was 16. "Because not yet have we had a curvy girl in Miss Universe or even in the Miss USA pageant".

In the pageant's 66th year, almost 100 women from around the world-including first-timers from Cambodia, Laos and Nepal- took part.

Singapore was represented by 24-year-old artist Manuela Bruntraeger.

Nel-Peters, who is from the Western Cape province, is a business management graduate from the North-West University.

Celebrities greeted the Philippines' Rachel Peters who failed to advance to the final five of the 66 Miss Universe. Rounding out the Top 16 were China's Roxana Qiu, Croatia's Shanaelle Petty, Ghana's Ruth Quashie, Great Britain's Anna Burdzy, Ireland's Cailín Toíbín and Sri Lanka's Christina Peiris.

Other contestants who advanced to the Top 5 are Venezuela and Thailand.

The 92 women on Sunday were divided into three regions: Americas, Europe, and Africa and Asian Pacific. Miss Universe is a very strong motivator for several young woman out there, and Miss Universe should use this to their advantage to promote higher education in young woman, and show them that you can't have beauty without the brains.

Miss Japan Momoko Abe won the Best in National Costume award.

This year's judges include YouTube star Lele Pons and former judge on "America's Next Top Model" Jay Manuel.
