Show of force planned by 3 United States aircraft carrier groups

YOKOSUKA/November 8, 2017 (NNS)(STL.News) - The USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) strike groups will commence a three-carrier strike force exercise in the Western Pacific, Nov. 11-14.

An official from the South Korean military said the strike groups were planning to hold joint military exercises with Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force on Saturday and Sunday, after which they will train with the South Korean Navy on Monday and Tuesday.

Animosity between the U.S. and the isolated regime could increase further when the first three-aircraft carrier exercise begins on Saturday.

The Navy will conduct air defense drills, sea surveillance, defensive air combat training and other drills over the Sea of Japan, located east of the Korean peninsula, according to a statement.

Three United States aircraft carriers are set to perform rare drills starting Saturday in the Western Pacific, in the midst of the North Korean crisis, and coinciding with the Asia tour of the American president, the US Navy said Thursday.

Trump launched a stinging attack on North Korea leader Kim Jong-un during the trip, branding him a "deranged tyrant", whose country is a "hell that no person deserves".

During his recent visit to Seoul, Trump said, " North Korea is not the paradise your grandfather envisioned.

"It is a rare opportunity to train with two aircraft carriers together, and even rarer to be able to train with three", U.S. Pacific Fleet chief Adm. Scott Swift said in a statement.

The statement did not rule out North Korea, who previously threatened to fire ballistic missiles off Guam, an American island in the Western Pacific, which hosts strategic US military bases.

Their presence is a formidable show of force against North Korea.

Shim added that Trump's way of pursuing foreign policy objectives through the support of naval power is a type of "gunboat diplomacy".

President Trump stood on the floor of the Unite Nations General Assembly several weeks ago and threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea, repeatedly insinuating the only way to deal with North Korea is through military force. This is a very different administration than the USA has had in the past.
