Police said that the identity of three LeT militants killed in the encounter at Magam, Handwara, is being ascertained.

Security forces launched a search operation at Magam in the Handwara area of Kupwara district in north Kashmir following information about the presence of militants there, a police official said. Hidden militants opened fire and a gunfight took place, during which the 3 militants were killed.

Khan said government forces were battling a few militants trapped in the area.

In another operation in the neighboring Kupwara area, a special forces soldier was killed in a continuing gunbattle, police said.

Khan claimed that "Pakistan is trying hard to push as many militants as possible (into Indian territory of Kashmir)" as snowfall could start soon in the northernmost state of India anyday now.

However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons.

"But I would like to reassure that we are taking measures to plug gaps along the LoC".
