According to sources, whose reports and facts have been verified, staff at the office of the Vice President, at the corner of Third Street and Central Avenue were instructed to pack all personal belongings and clear the building.

"(President) Mugabe has exercised his powers to relieve honourable vice president E.D. Mnangagwa of his position as vice president", Information Minister Simon Khaya Moyo told a press briefing in Harare, accusing him of "disloyalty".

The decision to dislodge Mnangagwa from being VP is widely linked to a perceived plot by the 93-year-old leader to appoint his wife as VP.

Mugabe expelled Mnangagwa on Monday afternoon for alleged disloyalty, disrespect and deceitfulness.

"In 1980 this person called Mnangagwa wanted to stage a coup".

In 2014, Mugabe expelled his female deputy Joice Mujuru on allegations of plotting to topple his through, among others, witchcraft allegations.

At the weekend, both Mugabe and his wife used political rallies to suggest that Mnangagwa would be fired. On Sunday, she said at a rally that she was ready to take over from her husband.

Speculation is now swirling over whether Grace Mugabe will be appointed to the vacant vice president's post at a party congress next month.

"So I have said to the president: 'You can also leave me in charge, '" she said.
