Apple has acquired Shazam

It went on: "Apple Music and Shazam are a natural fit, sharing a passion for music discovery and delivering great music experiences to our users".

"We can't imagine a better home for Shazam to enable us to continue innovating and delivering magic for our users", Shazam cited in a separate statement.

In a statement to 9to5Mac on Monday, Apple said, "We are thrilled that Shazam and its talented team will be joining Apple".

Shazam, one of the first apps to be popular globally, has been downloaded over 1 billion times and is used 20 million times a day around the world.

If we talk about the pricing, the acquisition pricing is quite high as per the expectations.

Interestingly, this is the first major acquisition after the Cupertino-based giant bought Beats in 2014 for almost $3 billion. The app has been in operation since 2002, when users would dial a number, put their phone to the tune and Shazam would then text the title and artist to them.

Now the Shazam app lets you pick your music streaming platform of choice to hear the song that was recognised. There will be a Buy button as well.

Google has offered a similar feature for a couple years now, However, it only allows customers to "pre-register" for an app release and not pre-oder for purchase. The company has launched its own music and video streaming service which nearly took two years to compete with the music companies like Spotify and Pandora. With the acquisition, Apple could further differentiate Siri by tightly integrating Shazam into its voice-based digital assistant. This feature is a good advantage if a developer is trying to draw attention to their new app.

The technology is also no longer quite as novel, with Shazam facing rivals such as SoundHound and with smartphones capable of ever more advanced recognition functions. The core functionality of this platform is to recognise the song and to give you proper information about that song with direct buy button.

Apple and Shazam have had a friendly relationship for years, but the catalyst was that pending bid from Snap.

As Apple Music chases Spotify's subscriber base numbers, such acquisitions will help add more value to Apple's own services.
