It's time to call this a tradition.
A Tulsa couple is grateful to the Salvation Army after a wedding ring was accidentally dropped into a donation kettle. Major Charles Fowler, Washoe County Salvation Army Reno corps coordinator, said in a news release.
The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit's overall fundraising goal is $7.85 million, and as of Friday, the organization has raised more than $3.5 million toward that goal. He also takes him to hospitals to help cheer up patients.
In Broward, the Christmas kettle campaign runs through December 23 at 45 locations across the county using individual volunteers and volunteers from civic groups.
Last Christmas season, another gold 1979 Krugerrand coin was put into the kettle.
In 2015, five coins were dropped off at two different Red Kettle locations in Pompano Beach. While Red Kettle donations don't fund the Angel Tree initiative, volunteers say the increase in applications illustrates a growing need.
"Without sufficient donations to the kettle campaign, I am concerned about our ability to meet the need for social services and continue providing the same level of service across the region", said Stephen Banfield, that division's commander. He chose to emulate what he saw as a sailor in Liverpool, England when one of the ports featured a large iron kettle called "Simpson's Pot" into which people could toss coins to help the poor.
