Paladins is stepping into the Battle Royale ring with Battlegrounds mode

Posted January 05, 2018

Paladins Battlegrounds is a new 100-player battle royale game that is coming after PUBG's place atop the throne, with the questionably titled free-to-play mode being introduced in Hi-Rez Studios' shooter. The MOBA roots can definitely make a difference in the Battle Royale genre; just think about the different roles like supporters and tanks. The already-released options are the Greek mythology-inspired SMITE, the hero shooter Paladins or turn-based strategy game Hand of the Gods: SMITE Tactics. Hi-Rez had big news for Paladins: Champions of the Realm fans at the HRX kickoff keynote conference, including new battle royale and team deathmatch modes, details on the next champion and more. Will Battle Royale work well with Paladins? All while exploring the map for loot through the four dozen outposts and tracking zeppelins that drop legendary gear. We expect it to do about as well as Fortnite Battle Royale, in that it gets a core of loyal players. It will be released sometime in 2018 for PC and consoles.

Team Deathmatch is exactly what it sounds like: a mode where your only objective is killing enemy heroes. The magician "rides a summoned two-headed dragon into battle, feeding it snacks to reload its magical energy". It will be available alongside a new map, Trade District. Moji is Paladins' 35th hero, not to mention a member of the new Leipori race. When asked if Hi-Rez Studios had any plans to port their games to the Switch or create brand new content for the Switch, Goren quickly responded with an excited "yes". Mounts will also be usable. You can get a glimpse of both new items in the reveal trailer.
