The automobile industry showcased its vision for electric-powered transport solution at the pre-open day of the Auto Expo 2018. Overall, about a dozen automakers have been targeting the EV space in the quest to fulfill India's goal to switch to electric cars by 2030. The biennial Auto Expo is expected to see 24 new launches and unveiling of over 100 vehicles this year which is much higher in comparison to 2016's event.
About 12 startups have participated in the 14th edition of Auto Expo, with an aim to be a part of India's story of transition from internal combustion engines to electric mobility.
Among its wide range of electric vehicle concepts was e-KUV100, India's first electric SUV which combines the benefits of an SUV with the unique advantage of an electric vehicle. He reportedly said, "In order to stitch up a strategy (for EV segment), we are requesting to have a roadmap regarding plans for charging stations".
It will also showcase a working model of next-generation hybrid technology that promises to bring down emissions, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and accelerate electrification of power trains in India.
Expanding it's product portfolio, two and three wheeler manufacturer TVS Motor forayed into the 125cc scooter segment, with the launch of NTORQ, priced at Rs 58,750 in New Delhi. The Tiago EV and the Tigor EV draw power from an electric drive system developed and supplied by Electrica EV. This is the World Premiere of the 2nd Generation Honda Amaze and the vehicle is scheduled to be launched in India in FY 18-19. It is based on Tata's brand new ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) architecture. The all-new MINI Countryman was unveiled at the Auto Expo and would be locally produced at the BMW Group plant in Chennai.
The expo was attended by renowned personalities like Bollywood Actor Shahrukh Khan at Hyundai stand supporting the government's swatch Bharat Campaign, Actress Sonakshi Sinha, Former Indian Captain Mohammed Azhrudin & Cricketer Gautam Gambhir were also spotted at the Auto Expo.
Ashok Leyland unveiled Circuit-S, an electric bus powered by a swappable smart battery. It also unveiled two scooters - "Maestro Edge 125" and "Duet 125" - at the expo.
BMW Motorrad India launched the all-new BMW F750 GS and the all-new BMW F850 GS and will be available as Completely Built-Up Units (CBU) from May 2018 onwards. The company also lifted the cover on South Korean arm SsangYong's G4 Rexton SUV, which will be launched in the Indian market later this year under the Mahindra badge.
Similarly, two-wheeler maker Honda Motorcycle & Scooter (HMSI) plans to launch 11 new models, including a concept scooter from its electric mobility platform.
