Trump at one point asked if they minded if he went off script, saying his prepared remarks were a little bit "boring". That has to happen now.
"I refuse to leave this stage until I say one more time that we must immediately harden our schools". The questions included training, and liability issues in the event a student were killed by friendly crossfire. "What we need to do is get to the root of the problem as to why these shootings have happened", he said. His statement comes just over a week after Nikolas Cruz carried a rifle into a gun-free zone and opened fire, killing 17. And they see that, it's such a lovely target. Also, although there were guns in the house, they thought they had the only key to where they had been secured.
At CPAC, most conservatives have trust in their Republican President that they never had in Democratic President Barack Obama, who campaigned after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School to ban assault-style weapons and limit high-capacity magazines.
He also doubled down on the NRA's longstanding position that armed Americans were the first line of defense in confronting deadly attacks, saying: "To stop a bad guy with a gun, it takes a good guy with a gun", referring to the November 5 Sutherland Springs, Texas, church shooting in which a 26-year-old gunman, who was also probably mentally unwell, shot and killed 26 people and injured 20 others.
President Trump also turned to statistics, saying: "History shows that a school shooting lasts, on average, 3 minutes".
Pollack's son Hunter appeared to support the idea. Trump said he wasn't concerned, though, about that.
Members of Trump's own party have said they're not interested in taking this up legislatively - Sen. "But real freedom requires the protection of all of our rights". And we have to do it for the mentally ill, we have to do very, very - we don't want people that are mentally ill to be having any form of weaponry. They're very very great people, they love this country - they're patriots.
The president's proposal came just hours after the NRA affirmed its opposition, calling such a restriction an infringement on gun owners' rights.
And then in his next sentence, he may have given away the reason he and the NRA seem to be using similar, and sometimes the exact same, language.
"They don't care if their laws work or not", he added.
FL shooting father: 'I was on a mission' at Trump meeting
Trump says in a joint news conference with Australia's prime minister that making schools a "gun-free environment" doesn't increase safety.
As noted, the idea of arming teachers has filed one of the parents present at the meeting in the White house.
"What I saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of building 12, take up a position", Israel said. I want action too. If they really have that aptitude, because not everybody has an aptitude for a gun. He says the man standing outside the school "doesn't love the children". That guard has since resigned. "There are no words I mean these families lost their children".
The President also proposed to employ in the schools as staff members who provide security on the territory of educational institutions, former soldiers who know how to handle weapons. "We need to listen to our young people", Cuadra-Saez said.
When asked by radio host Hugh Hewitt about arming teachers, the US education secretary, Betsy DeVos, said states "clearly have the opportunity and the option to do that".
"Give me another room and I'll teach", she said.
Olivia Bertels, a middle school English teacher in Kansas, and Brittany Wheaton, an English teacher in Utah, said they started the #ArmMeWith movement on Tuesday in response to the suggestion that more guns in schools would help make them safer. I don't like it.
Many participants, such as Grace Guishard, a second-grade teacher in Maryland, posted requests for more school counselors and social workers.
The president said unless a school has "offensive capability, you're wasting your time, you're wasting your time".
The message: Stand up to the gun lobby and oust lawmakers who have bent to its will.
