Palestinian assailant killed in West Bank

PPS said that a total of 71 Palestinians from Jenin district have been detained since Israeli military launched an extensive manhunt for Ahmad Nasr Jarrar, who allegedly killed an Israeli settler near Nablus last month. One Palestinian was killed and 47 others were injured in ensuing clashes with IDF soldiers as they left the area, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Palestinians say East Jerusalem, captured along with the West Bank by Israel in a 1967 war, must be the capital of a state they seek.

The wounded Israeli guard was taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

The Palestinian suspect in the murder of the rabbi on January 9 was shot dead in a predawn raid hours after another Israeli was killed in a stabbing in the West Bank.

Earlier this week in response to Shevach's murder, Israel's government in a rare move made a decision to "legalise" the rogue West Bank outpost where he lived, Havat Gilad, essentially creating a new settlement.

Ben-Gal's widow, Miriam gave a video statement on Wednesday evening, saying that retribution for her husband's murder could only come from building their settlement of Har Bracha into a large city.

Israel faced sharp criticism from the administration of former USA president Barack Obama over settlement construction, but that has not been the case under his successor Donald Trump. Two Israelis have been killed in that timeframe.
