The leader of surfwear brand Quiksilver went missing off the coast of France. Authorities say three helicopters and two boats are searching for the CEO in rough seas.
Quiksilver is a well-known surf-wear company founded in Australia near the shores of Torquay.
Agnes, a great surfer and fisherman, knows the area and waves really well and would have done the trip thousands of times so everyone is somewhat stunned.
"The Boardriders family and entire surfing world are devastated by this news", the company said in a statement Tuesday.
The local coast guard suspended the search on Tuesday night and resumed the operation Wednesday morning.
The Maritime Prefect said in a statement: "At 2.35pm, after consultation with the director of the CROSS (Regional Operational Monitoring and Rescue Centre) of Etel, the maritime prefect of the Atlantic decides to suspend research at sea by directed means".
The Quiksilver CEO frequently takes his boat out in the mornings.
Agnes was the head of its France-based European headquarters before being named CEO of the whole company in 2015.
Despite his traveling around the world on business, Agnes remained much attached to his hometown and the local waters described as tumultuous, according to a profile that appears on a local news website covering Sudouest.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family all at this time, as well as the search and rescue teams", it said.
