South Africa claimed the bronze medal after a 29-7 thrashing of the US - who had opted to rest a whole host of stars.

Kenya stunned US 24-19 in the semifinals, and storm into the finals in spectacular fashion.

It certainly looked as if Kenya was intent on reversing the narrow 24-21 defeat in the pool match after Willy Ambaka opened the scoring early in the first half. "We had three pretty tough games today so to get through it with three wins in a pool like that, we're really pleased".

The Innocent Simiyu coached side ended the Vancouver Sevens in emphatic fashion bagging silver after a tense final in the Main Cup against Fiji.

In other quarter-finals, the United States shut out New Zealand 17-0 in a match that saw no score until the second half and South Africa staged a second-half fightback to beat Australia 24-19.

Fellow Pool A side Uruguay join Canada in the Challenge Trophy quarter-finals alongside Samoa, Wales, France, Spain, Scotland and Russian Federation. In their final match of the day, Canada beat Uruguay 47-5 but just missed out on a place in the Cup quarter-finals after Australia beat the U.S. 31-21 in the Pool A closer.

The New Zealanders did not help their cause by missing 10 tackles, and were a little bereft of ideas as they failed to break down the American defence, despite a wealth of early possession. New Zealand are third on 92.

Afters six rounds of the 2018 Sevens Series, South Africa retain top spot in the standings with 109 points.

Baber's attention now turns to preparing his side for next month's Hong Kong Sevens, the biggest competition in the World Series calendar.
