Kannur: Amid reports of vandalism of statues across the country, an unidentified man has defaced a Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Taluk Office here.

The statue situated in front of the Taliparamba Taluk Office was vandalised at around 7 am on Thursday.

In Kannur's Thaliparamba area, the spectacles of the Gandhi statue were damaged by unknown miscreants.

Following this, a statue of Dravidian ideologue "Periyar" EV Ramasamy was damaged in Tirupattur in Tamil Nadu.

He destroyed the glasses on the statue and the garland that was on the statue before he left the scene, say the police. "The crowd started to get restless by then and after he sensed it he fled the scene", added Vinu Mohan. Even before this, in 2000, under BJP government, the statue installed there was shattered to pieces by culprits who remained untraced. The police had launched an investigation into the case soon after it was reported.

There have been numerous incidents of statues being vandalised in various parts of the country.

While H Raja has since expressed his heartful regret for his comments, the BJP went on damage control mode.

This came a day after PM Modi strongly condemned such incidents and spoke to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh over the issue.

MHA has asked the states that they must take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents.
